A Very Original Red Tortoiseshell And Boulle Clock By Henri Marc
A Very Original Red Tortoiseshell And Boulle Clock By Henri Marc
Date of manufacture: c1850
Current Status: For Sale
One of my favourite French clockmakers of the 19th century, Henri Marc was a prolific clockmaker during the early to mid 19th century and one outstanding feature of all his clocks is the standard of workmanship, not only in the quality of the movement but also the casework as well. This clock is no exception.. veneered in stunning red tortoiseshell and fine engraved brass inlay featuring vines, flowers, leaves, fruit bowls and rococo scrolls. The very fine hand chased ormolu to the top, sides and base have aged beautifully. This clock would have been a substantial purchase when new. The 13cm cast and gilt bezel with 12 fine porcelain cartouche for the numerals and a centre porcelain panel with the makers name Hy Marc Paris. The original trefoil hands are still present and undamaged. Standing 39cm high, the clock is a good size and not too small. As will all clocks.. I could spend a few hours polishing the case so that it shines like a new penny ( and it would look amazing!) but all that patina will be lost.. so back to the original question… polish or not? Over to you!
