A marvellous George III period flame mahogany longcase clock by the celebrated Charles Haley ( 1770-1800) the case is typical of this maker and another clocks can be found with the similar shallow arch silvered dial and case in Sotheby’s September sale. The clock standing around 206cm gives the proportions a pleasing look. As with all these high quality London clocks the flame mahogany is simply stunning and the brass reeded columns to the hood are reminiscent of the bracket clocks of this period. As expected, the fine movement is well made and has been subjected to a full overhaul in our in-house workshop, The clock will come with a full three year guarantee for your peace of mind. An interesting feature of this movement is the “silent” lever that can be seen protruding from the side of the movement, a cord is attached to this and run through to the trunk of the case so that it can be attached to an existing hook. When hooked, this clock will not strike. Charles Haley operated from Wigmore St, London and became an hon. Freeman in 1781 and was celebrated for being a patentee of a remontoire escapement for chronometers ( 1796 No. 2132) He was one of the experts appointed by the select committee of the House of Commons to report on Mudge’s chronometers in 1793. A fabulous clock by a well respected maker
