A very good quality bronze of Rudyard Kiplings’s Mowgli from around c1894.
The jungle book was a series of stories based around a man-cub called Mowgli who was raised by wolves.
This bronze, made by the eminent bronzier L. Bureau (1866-1906) has a most wonderful patina. Bureau was predominantly a sculpter of animals and this is an obvious diversion of his highly sought after animal bronzes.. to link this bronze back to his usual work, he has taken a quote from the jungle book “there is a beast” and translated it to Italian on a plaque. The irony being that the beast is man.
The well made French 8 day movement by Marti has a fully jewelled movement and has been fully overhauled and restored.
